About the English Language Institute
The English Language Institute (ELI) at Sacred Heart University offers high quality English Language instruction to non-native speakers. Here, students can take up to 20 hours of class per week in our CEA-accredited Intensive English Program.
Every ESL instructor has earned a master’s degree in TESOL and has considerable experience in the field. They are dedicated to excellence in teaching and providing orientation to American culture. They are committed to meet the students at the level where they are and bring them to the utmost of their abilities.
Our programs are designed for students who are 17 and older. We offer five 8-week sessions:
- Fall 1 (August – October)
- Fall 2 (October – December)
- Spring 1 (January – March)
- Spring 2 (March – May)
- Summer (June – July)

Our average class size is 10 to 15 students, giving both students and teachers the opportunity for in-depth communication. Enrichment programing provides: Conversation partners, individual tutoring, cultural excursions, program-sponsored meals, and Academic class visits. Students have opportunities to share their culture and experience with students in other departments.
The ELI enjoys the support of the entire campus of Sacred Heart University which includes the library, the student life office, the student union office, recreation room, gym, cafeterias and information technology support (IT). ELI students have access to all meeting rooms, lounge areas and other recreation areas on campus, and are also free to participate in some student clubs and events on campus.
